Overview - Study Area

The project alternatives have been refined.

The  project alternative refinements are as follows:

  • The four refined bridge-replacement alignments are:

    • “New” Alignment South (formerly 6-lane Replacement Bridge – South)
    • “New” Alignment North (formerly 6-lane Replacement Bridge – North)
    • “Existing” Alignment South (formerly Twin Replacement Bridges - South)
    • “Existing” Alignment North (formerly Twin Replacement Bridges - North)

  • All four alignment alternatives allow for navigational clearance unchanged from the existing bridge at a minimum of 135 feet above mean high water (MHW).

  • All four alignment alternatives include a permanent road for construction, maintenance and security; the road would be located generally below the proposed replacement bridge and approach spans.

For more information about the refined alternatives selection process, please click here.  Additional information is also provided in a presentation made to the Environmental Task Force and Technical Advisory Committee on September 6, 2007.

These four refined bridge-replacement alternatives are undergoing analysis, the results of which will be documented in the DEIS.  As is standard practice, the DEIS is also evaluating a “no-build” alternative to represent future conditions without the proposed project; the effects of the four bridge-replacement alternatives are compared to the future no-build conditions to determine whether and what potential impacts would result in the future with each of the four “build” alternatives.
