Overview - Preliminary Alternatives

As required by NEPA, the DEIS is evaluating the potential impacts of the No-Build alternative, which represents what future conditions in the study area would be if no action is taken to replace or improve the Goethals Bridge.

The types of alternatives that have been considered in the environmental review process include:

  • bridge replacement south or north of the existing Goethals Bridge (the Port Authority’s proposal);

  • bridge rehabilitation for significant extension of the existing Bridge’s life span;

  • other structural replacement or improvement alternatives (alternatives that would require construction of transportation infrastructure);

  • non-structural improvement alternatives (alternatives that would not require construction of transportation infrastructure, such as charging higher tolls during rush hour to encourage travel during other periods to rush-hour reduce congestion); and

  • reasonable alternatives identified through the scoping process.
